“I-I’m Ian,” he stuttered. “Ian Iansson.”

Ian couldn’t stop looking at those terrible green eyes. They were like puddles of deadly radioactive waste and Ian felt like he was falling into them.

“Well, good evening, Ian Iansson,” said the woman, with a voice so gravelly it could have been used to cover roads. “My name is Gertrude Leviathan.”

Ian couldn’t be certain but he thought he saw her green eyes glowing when she talked. He suddenly felt very, very cold.

Mr Grimble stalked over to where Ian was standing.

“What did you hear?” he snapped.

“Er, n-nothing,” stammered Ian. “I just got here.”

Gertrude Leviathan edged closer to Ian.

“What are you doing out of your room?” she said.

Ian wanted to back away but he couldn’t move.

“I couldn’t sleep,” he said.

“The boy couldn’t sleep, Mr Grimble. Perhaps you could help him?”

Mr Grimble stared hard at Ian and an awful smile flickered across his face.

“Of course, m’lady,” he said, still staring at Ian. “Let’s get you back into your room and tucked up in bed.”

“In bath,” said Ian.

“Oh, yes,” said Mr Grimble. “Let’s get you tucked up in bath.”
